Molly Healey has done what many had deemed nigh impossible: she has broken the gender and DNA barrier to become the newest full-time member of Big Smith, effective 2008, adding much-needed fiddle textures to this previously testosterone-driven combo. She was already familiar to Big Smith audiences as the band's frequent guest, having joined them onstage as she traveled with regular opening act Cindy Woolf. Prior to that, Molly's resume was already a mile-long, being much in demand by just about anyone that had anything to do with the Springfield, Missouri music scene. Her session work appears on close to twenty releases on the MayApple label alone. Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, the daughter of classically-trained musicians, Molly's early training was as a vocalist in musical theater. As she pursued music in college, she began developing her improvisational violin style in downtown venues with Barefoot Revolution, Back & to the Left, and others. 2005 saw the release of Molly's own songwriting and singing on the album Expecting, which she recorded while literally expectant with daughter Annabelle. She has completed her master's degree in music education at Missouri State University (minus one thesis, currently in the works). As her tenure with Big Smith continues, expect Molly's talent and imagination to propel the band toward heretofore uncharted territory.
